The Gallery of Modern Art was born in a prosperous and happy historical moment, between the 19th and 20th centuries, that of the “happy Palermo”. A stimulating era, of well-being and international projection of the city. The GAM collections well describe the atmosphere and ideals of that historical moment, the urban transformation of the modern city, the creation of the cultural pole of the Teatro Politeama Garibaldi, in whose redoubt the first headquarters of the Gallery were established.
Even today, in the headquarters of the Sant’Anna alla Misericordia complex, the GAM tells Palermo. Topographically located near some of the major city sites of historical-monumental interest, in a district with an ancient history, deeply anchored in the commercial history of the Mediterranean routes which had a nerve center in Palermo. And, above all, with the will to overcome the architectural boundaries of its space and to listen to and relate to the citizens and the stories of the city.
