THE ARAB-NORMAN IN THE HALLS OF GAM

A WORLD HERITAGE

The definition of “Arab-Norman” is due to the scholars of the nineteenth century in reference to the very particular artistic-architectural production elaborated in Sicily in the Norman era. An era in which the Islamic, Romanesque-Latin and Byzantine components, under the aegis and the Norman patronage, gave life to a profound cultural syncretism whose outcome was very high and very original artistic expressions of universal value. A unique cultural dimension in the complex Mediterranean mosaic, which goes beyond the value of individual monuments, whose beauty and exceptional nature, combined with exotic charm, attracted intellectuals, scholars and travelers of the Grand Tour, who rediscovered their value through their descriptions and picturesque depictions . These characteristics led to the inscription of the serial site of “Arab-Norman Palermo and the Cathedrals of Cefalù and Monreale” in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2015.
