THE MEDITERRANEAN LANDSCAPE IN 19TH CENTURY PAINTING

THE SICILIAN LANDSCAPE

The bright beauty of the Sicilian landscape has been at the center of the study of many GAM painters who, with different approaches and methodologies, have achieved excellent results.

The great master of the Sicilian landscape was Francesco Lojacono, who became very famous and appreciated in Italy and abroad. Almost all the painters present in the Gallery who dedicated themselves to this genre were direct or indirect pupils of his. Various artists gravitate around Lojacono: some try and in part manage to distance themselves from him to find autonomous languages, others willingly accept to be students and prosecutors of the master’s language, such as Antonino Leto, Ettore de Maria Bergler and Michele Catti. The latter is one of the most relevant representatives of different visions and conceptions of the Sicilian landscape whose works can be appreciated along the permanent exhibition itinerary of the GAM.
