SEASONS IN THE WORKS OF GAM

THE COLORS OF THE SEASONS IN THE WORKS OF THE GAM

The landscape is one of the main themes present in the works of the Galleria d’Arte Moderna in Palermo. Painters present us with landscapes and nature in numerous variations.

For this reason, it is possible to observe the works with the eyes of scientists and find out which seasons are represented in the museum rooms.

The earth, whose axis is inclined, rotates around the sun like a top and during this revolution receives the sun in different ways from one area to another (hemispheres), with greater or lesser intensity and alternation.

Solstices and equinoxes, in fact, mark the transition from one season to another. The alternation creates the cycle of the four seasons – autumn, winter, spring and summer – or the four astronomical periods into which the solar year is divided.

As a result, the environment around us is constantly changing. And since all things in nature have a color, the alternation of the seasons affects giving specific colors to each moment of the year.

The artists have dedicated themselves, directly or indirectly, to the seasons: from composers such as Antonio Vivaldi with the famous four seasons, to painters, such as those in this gallery.
